De zoektocht om het bestaan te begrijpen is via de wetenschap en de argumenten voor en tegen het bestaan van God voor mij beslecht. Het bestaan van God is voor mij wel duidelijk mede gezien de wetenschappelijke beperktheden (zie het verslag zoals opgenomen op de site onder ‘over het bestaan’).
De vraag is wat we kunnen weten over God. Daarover bestaan veel meningen. De theologie bestudeert de religies. Hier wordt het Boeddhisme vaak genoemd maar is dat wel een religie? Het boekje van Damien Keown ‘Buddhism a very short introduction’ is in ieder geval helder over wat een religie is en of het Boeddhisme hierin past. Keown hanteert de 7 verschillende dimensies zoals beschreven door Ninian Smart en concludeert dat het Boeddhisme inderdaad een religie is. Interessant ! Keown manages to explain Buddhism in laymens terms. As I am that layman I cannot check whether he did this well but it gave me really a great understanding of the contents of this religion although a creator God as such is not part of the beliefs (in fact Keown argues why Buddhism can be seen as a religion according to the criteria of Ninian Smart).
It was very informative for me in the following aspects:
. The life of Buddha and how he came to be enlightened and reached the nirvana.
. The core of the Buddhis teachings which I understood as follows:
A. The 4 noble truths:
1. people suffer since tou do not get what you want.
2. The suffering comes forth from cravings
3.The suffering ends when you can stop craving.
4.The way to realise this is via wisdom, morality and meditation.
B. Boeddhism has two main streams the traditional Therevada (more oriented to personal enlightment) and the modern Mahayana (more oriented to the welfare of the world as total).
C. Meditation is the strategy to become what you want to be. In meditation you learn to be a spectator of your body, your emotions, your thoughts and finally your conscience. In this way you will be disconnected and free. You enter into an so called nothingness. This is a core concept since Buddhism denies the self like a car which is composed out of many parts but has no soul.
For me this is hard to swallow, I do think a human has an identity and self.
D. With regard to ethics a moral life is key. This is a life which coincides with Dharma being the natural and physical order of things, Buddhism takes this as a given.
This also is a hard point for me since the questions where the Dharma comes from is not adressed and this Dharma also leads to a more or less deterministic world view. I have the impression that there is a contradiction somewhere because personal action and choices are important for the Buddha.
Life is sacred for Buddhists even to the most simple forms and violence in principle is bad.
Wetenschap filosofie religie: begrip zoeken

Oo internet vind ik de volgende definitie van religie. “Een meestal al eeuwen lang bestaand stelsel van verhalen, rituelen en gedragsvoorschriften, gebaseerd op een geloof in een God, of Goden, en meestal ook in een bovenaards voortbestaan na de dood. De vier grote hedendaagse religies zijn Jodendom, Christendom, Islam en Hindoeïsme”.
Uit jouw beschrijving van het boeddhisme begrijp ik dat men niet gelooft in een god. Dat betekent dat het niet valt onder de definitie van religie.

Dit zijn baude uitspraken! Begrijpen van het bestaan… Het bestaan van God. Jammer dat het bestaan van God mede gemotiveerd is door een negatieve motivatie vanwege beperkingen van de wetenschap. Maar ja dat begrijp ik wel. Dit is iets wat niet te bevatten is voor ons denkraam. Er is onzekerheid zeg je in je conclusie waar de balans wordt opgemaakt. Ik blijf het knagende gevoel houden dat omdat we iets niet kunnen verklaren er maar een God concept wordt aangenomen. En wat dan? Ja, dan willen we graag weten wie die God is.
En daar zijn we nu mee bezig. Een Gods begrip. Waar je mee kunt leven. Dat past in je referentiekader. En aldus zal het voor iedereen verschillend zijn.
